I love reading your posts and appreciate the time and energy you put into them. I completely agree on your assessment of Magnum, and if anything, they are hurting their own reputation as word of their actions and beliefs in the AI space become more common knowledge. The integrity they've earned in the industry, like the "trust" factor you reference above, will be wiped out fairly quickly. They're anticipating that everyone will evolve with them on this issue, and I'm not certain that is the case; perhaps in a couple generations, but not now.

Good luck with your classes. I've also returned to school, in a completely new field for me -- science -- in order to become a nurse. At the ripe "old" age of 56. Never too young to try something new. From attorney to full-time mom to photographer to nurse. Can't wait to see what I do with it all! :)

Thank you, Aileen. I'm also mystified by Magnum's recent responses to controversies. It's hard to rebuild a reputation that's been sullied. I'm hopeful they will start leading instead of... whatever they're doing now.

I'm impressed that you're studying to become a nurse. Bloody good for you. Attorney-Mum-Photographer-Nurse is quite the CV. As a 57 year-old student, I'm impressed that you youngsters have so much get-up-and-go!

I wish you every success with your studies. And, really, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. It's appreciated.

Go well.

I find AI imagery to be the b*st*rd child of science and technology. But then, I remind myself, I'm old. I continue to care about the power of photographic imagery. I detest the verbal and 'print' deceptions we are witnessing in this era of truth and democracy trashing. In a positive vein let AI 'art' be marketed as such for those who wish to have it. It's not photography. Perhaps a definition of photography with it's own Appellation d'origine contrôlée?

Your video - fab, the resulting images likewise. Laughing and connection without shared language - brill.

Thank you, Andy. I think "a definition of photography with its own Appellation d'origine contrôlée" is an excellent idea. Perhaps there will be some built-in verification system in the future. Let's hope so.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed the video. And you're quite right, not sharing a spoken language doesn't have to be an obstacle. In fact, it's often a source of amusement, which can help break down barriers.

Cheers!

Sometimes I’m happy I didn’t make the jump to full time pro back in the day. Great article on the AI subject and totally agree with your point of view.

Thanks, Ruben. What did you choose to do instead of photography? Something with greater longevity, I hope.

I had a very quick glance at your Substack posts today and will return for a less hurried look tomorrow. There's some soft of endorsement thing on Substack. When I figure out how it works, I'll add one for you.

Cheers!

I agree with Robert: AI created images should be classed as digital art, not as photographs.

Doesn't the word 'photography' literally mean 'painting with light'? If an image has been created inside a computer, then no actual light was involved... it's all just ones and noughts . QED.

But, that video, Gav? Pure joy.

Brightened my morning immensely. Thank you.

I totale agree with your point of view. I also like the technical evolution but AI pictures made by PC and “sold” for a real picture isn’t a photo. It can be something else like “digital art” or “picture creation”, but not using the word “photo” because it has nothing to do with photography.
