Kodachrome. A nostalgic reflection on the legacy of an iconic colour film. And news of a brand new Lightroom and Photoshop emulation that brings Kodachrome’s magic to your desktop (or mobile device).
Excited for the Kodachrome presets, literally counting down the minutes until release!
Do you have any plans to add Kodachrome X to the mix? I primarily shoot in a way that emulates the early 1960s as true-to-life as possible, and being able to shoot 64 ISO with "K-12" would be my dream come true.
I imagine it's a cross between Kodachrome II and Kodachrome 64!
Fine if not, I could always just overexpose by 2/3 a stop and be a Kodachrome II man :)
Hi Adam, thanks for your comment. I wasn't able to obtain sufficient data for Kodachrome X, unfortunately. And what I could find varied too much to make a consistent profile. I think you're right, Kodachrome II would be closest. It used the same K-12 process, as you say so the colour space would be similar. Perhaps using the Kodachrome II profile with some exposure adjustments and applying the Kodachrome 64 grain preset that I'm including would be a good starting point? I hope the emulation does what you want and I appreciate your enthusiasm. Cheers!
Back in 1981 I was shooting Ektachrome 200 that I was bulk loading... I'd learned how to develop B&W at school from a forward thinking art teacher... Terry Capper (RIP) he wielded an F2 - so at Uni I bought an FM... and started my own E6 developing in my bedroom using multiple water baths, thermometer, my watch and mini hand held kettle/cup of tea heater element courtesy of Exchange and Mart! Watching the first milky roll of film drying to give crisp colours, I'll never forget it. The years roll by and work transfers to digital and it isn't the same. So armed with a Mamiya C220 and Portra along with my Leica MA shooting TriX or Ultramax 400 I'm more than a happy bunny the images are more authentic and of the moment not having to rely on digital manipulation or checking the back of the camera! Geneva sounds fun... I could tie it in with a trip to see my brother-in-law in Nendaz... Geneva is usually just a transit point for me... and I'm on Foto App also. A nice lunchtime read that had me reminiscing. Thank you
This is really interesting to hear. I used your old Kodachrome presets for the canon DSLR cameras with great results. Very keen to try the new V3 with Canon R5 raw files.. have you used them with the R5? Happy with the results?
Hi Roy, I've tested the new presets and profiles with files from an EOS R3, which I imagine are very similar.
This is a very unscientific test: I've got just one file from an R5. I've taken a quick screenshot, showing the presets being applied to the R5 raw file, straight out of the camera. I've also shown some of the supplementary preset changes. I skipped the grain presets because they're too subtle to see in a quick video.
Hopefully you'll be able to see this and it will at least give you a flavour.
Thanks for this. Love the piano! Art is everywhere.. I will certainly be buying when they come on sale. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into these presets and also your content in general. Always interesting. All the best. RR

Looking forward to the emulation! Could you also let us know about the Geneva event? I live 20 mins away, so may be able to join!
Thanks in advance!

Hi Marcus. Yes, I will share more details of the photo walks, not only in Geneva but in other locations too.

Used to use Kodachrome as a pro back in the 60 and 70s. It was the standard. Look forward to seeing this emulation. And to photo walks.

Exchange & Mart! Now you're really turning up the nostalgia dial.
Your bathroom darkroom sounds wonderful. I really miss having a darkroom. Maybe one day...
If you make it to Geneva, I'd look forward to meeting you. If not in September then perhaps our paths will cross at another time.
Cheers!
Bedroom not bathroom my mother wondered why I moved the bed... covering up that burn mark lol

PS - apologies, I forgot to mute the audio. I hope you like Ryuichi Sakamoto playing the piano!
