The bit about the crying glacier reminded me of Lisa Baril's new-ish book, The Age of Melt.

Thank you, Lasell. The Age of Melt looks really interesting. It's on my "Want to Read" list. It has some good reviews:

I haven’t even got beyond your first paragraphs and I’ve hit ‘like’. There’s an epidemic of antisocial noise in (south) London and it drives me crazy. If you have to talk or play music, TikTok etc then FGS put headphones on or in. It really brings out the right-wing in me and I long for the days when common standards included not having a loud FaceTime conversation on the 159.

Anything that brings out the 'right-wing' can't be good. It seems to be universal so there must have been some cultural shift that makes it seem OK to have so much 'main character energy'. Anyway, I hope you'll have more peaceful journeys on the 159 in future 😁

Indeed :) I’ve thought long about this and have loosely concluded that it’s connected to a breakdown of trust in authority, combined with mobile technology advances/the increase in reels etc. Passengers are also intimidated from regulating against others for fear of being physically attacked. I wonder whether it’s time to bring back the good old bus conductor?!

There ought to be some kind of noise-cancelling technology, like in headphones, that can be directed towards offenders' devices. Whoever invents such a device will be on to a winner!

I bought a Zoom H1 essential last year, before going to Vietnam, plus a windshield. I found the windshield essential for outdoor stuff as with my old Zoom I used to have too much noise. My last posts already had some local sound clips.

Love to add that layer of immersive experience, like you did here with several examples.

I agree, an audio clip can be really evocative. No amount of cleverly crafted words could ever describe the Karaoke you found in HCMC, for example, nearly as well as a 60 second audio clip. I feel better about my own singing after hearing that!

The H1n Essential looks impressive. Now I have to learn what "32-bit float recording" is and find a justification for upgrading!

Glad you feel better about your own singing, I wouldn’t bet my skills against those guys 😂
