Isn’t it all about this?
Although I wasn't thinking about Martin Parr, you're right, this is exactly what he did so very well. You've given the perfect example.
There was a Martin Parr exhibition at the Arles Photo Festival last month – very popular, as you'd expect. He was a long-time friend and supporter of the festival so his name popped up in many conversations.
There's much to appreciate in this post, Gavin--from your lovely photographs of the Rhône and Arve confluence to your introducing me to Melissa Farlow's (!) and Keith Armstrong's work.
I found Farlow's images to be particularly striking--inspiring me to shift from reading your post in Gmail to seeing the images in a larger format on my computer. How on earth did she capture "Cowgirl Heidi Redd"? The action is amazing and the lighting is spectacular--with her whip arcing up toward the sun. Was Farlow following Redd on horseback??? That might be the most amazing photograph I've seen in 2026.

In the podcast interview, Melissa speaks about her love of horses. She tells of writing to Roy Rogers as a child, asking if he'd give his horse to her.
